How to Bathe Your Newborn

Bathing your newborn for the first time can feel both joyful and a little intimidating. But with a few basic steps and gentle care, it can become a special bonding moment between you and your baby.

1️⃣ When to Start

Wait until your baby’s umbilical cord stump falls off (usually within 1–2 weeks) before giving a full bath. Until then, stick to sponge baths using a soft washcloth and warm water.

2️⃣ Prepare Your Bathing Area 🛁

Choose a warm, draft-free room and have everything ready before you begin:

  • A baby bathpan or basin
  • Mild baby soap or wash (tear-free)
  • A soft towel (preferably hooded)
  • clean diaper and clothe
  • Cotton balls for eyes and ears

3️⃣ Bath Time Tips 💦

  • Fill the bath with just 2–3 inches of warm water (around 37°C or 98.6°F).
  • Gently lower baby into the water, supporting the head and neck.
  • Use your hand or a soft cloth to wash baby’s face, body, and hair.
  • Pay attention to folds around the neck, behind the ears, and diaper area.

4️⃣ After the Bath 🧼

  • Wrap baby immediately in a warm towel and pat dry (don’t rub).
  • Apply a gentle baby lotion or oil if needed.
  • Dress your baby in a clean diaper and comfy clothes.

🔒 Safety First

  • Never leave baby unattended during bath time.
  • Always test the water temperature with your wrist or elbow.
